Traveller’s Diary Part #2: Kopi Luwak from Bali, The coffee beans that come from animal poop

We know coffee as that aromatic elixir that not only relaxes our senses but energies us to take on the world. But hey, what if your coffee beans came out from animal poop? yay or nay?! Wait there is more, also what if I told you, this is the most expensive coffee in the world?

This was on my trip to Bali when our cab driver cum self proclaimed guide took us to a Luwak farm. Yes, there was language barrier and our entire family put their heart and soul to understand what our driver, who was a native of Indonesia told us. We managed to understand at first that we were on a coffee farm which also housed some sort of animals in a cage. As tourists we were obliged to a lot of WOWs and OMGs. Slowly, we put their words and our minds together, googled a few things and managed to understand where we were exactly.

What is Kopi Luwak?

So here is how it goes. Luwak is an animal that is made to eat freshly harvested coffee beans or cherries as they are called. It is said that the Luwak eats only the best riped cherries there are in the lot and rejects the other. I will call this a quality test phase. Now as the beans stay in its stomach over night, they ripen. It is said that the Luwak’s digestive juices gives the coffee its unique flavour and apparently the step that makes Kopi Luwak the most expensive in the world. Now comes the most interesting disgusting part, the animal poops! The coffee farmers cum feces specialist separate the coffee beans and clean them which are then ready to be roasted and grounded for your oh so strong coffee brew!

They told us we could try the drink. We mustered all our guts, laughed incessantly and just managed to gulp it down. Trust me, it is not for the faint hearted but a must try at least once.
